So, you have a plumbing problem in your house, either your sink, tub or shower drain clogged? What to do? Should you call the plumber? Well, it’s the best way to do, if you don’t mind to pay an extra $60-90/hour.

First, let’s see how you have a clogged drain.

    P-trap.
All the piping underneath your sink or your tub is connected to a P-trap (see the image above) to drain the waste water. At some point, this p-trap has collected lots of debris that may clog your drain system. You will notice it when it starts to drain slower and slower. That’s the time when you start frustrating by pouring DRAIN liquid to the pipe, which is NOT right.
NEVER POUR ANY DRAIN LIQUID TO UNCLOG YOUR DRAIN SYSTEM

    Second, why we need a P-TRAP? Is a p-trap a CRAP?

There is a science behind all of this. P-TRAPS are needed because:
    • to prevent the noxious air or gases coming in from the sewage, but still able to flow the water out,
    • to protect sewer system from solid items that might go down to the drain.
It is very important that the p-traps are sealed and installed properly to avoid the noxious gases backflow from the sewage system. This smell is very unhealthy and can cause illness.

Third, how to unclog the drain?

If you want to get a low cost maintenance, get an auger or snake. You can easily find it at your local hardware store.

Final, simple maintenance to prevent frequent clogs

    1. Get a sink drainer with the smallest holes possible.
    2. Cover your bath sink with kitchen towel when you do your hair.
    3. Try not to waste any solid material to your drain system.
